Relationships

I am a secondary school teacher not because of my love for history, English, or digital media. I am a
teacher because of my passion to empower youth. I consider my self an advocate for youth and am
constantly striving to maintain positive relationships with every student I meet. I am constantly doing research
on how positive relationships affect learning in the classroom. These relationships are possible by recognizing
the importance of being a life long learner as a teacher. Treating others how you wish to be treated, and
speaking with respect to students to gain respect are important values in my teaching. This TED Talk by
Rita Pierson encapsulates how important relationships are to me.

Personal Passions

As young people spend more time inside schools than ever before, it should be
a place where they begin to discover their talents, passions, and find how they can be successful.
By recognizing students as individuals, talents and passions are brought into the classroom. I am many things
other than a teacher, and I want my students to know that. Every student is much more than a student, and
giving students the encouragement to pursue something they love is one of my favourite things to do. Through
personalized lessons, my teaching constantly encourages students to think outside of the box while critically
questioning what they are learning and why they are learning it.  Of the many places
and experiences that youth encounter, my classroom is a space where every student is given the guidance
to connect to and examine history, literature, and technology while pursuing what really makes them tick.

Stepping Outside the Box

As I continue to work in the world of education, I am realizing that stepping outside of the box
is not an easy task. Although it is tough, it is not impossible. Being different, creative,
experimental, and flexible are things that I hope I can begin to master as a teacher. Through the lessons I create,
guest speakers that I invite,  and varied assignments and assessments, are ways that I try to step outside of the box.
I work hard to network throughout the schools to learn from as many teachers and students as I can.
I am constantly striving to try new teaching techniques, flipping my classroom, learning through
different mediums such as music and technology. Our textbooks
and classrooms are guides and spaces, but I believe it is my job as a teacher to be creative and open to every
guide and space available to my students.
