January 10 - Current Events
We began discussing a topic last class, a current event, that also important to our understanding of land here in Canada. Start by checking out the articles below. Then conduct your own research to try to become informed about the protests at Wet'suwet'en Camp in Northern BC. You must be able to identify the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW.
Global - "Why did RCMP arrest..."
Vancouver Sun - "How politicians got it all wrong"
The Globe and Mail - "The Wet'suwet'en: A Guide to the Story so Far"
Global - Justin Trudeau in Kamloops - Jan. 10
Consider the following Questions:
How should Premier John Horgan proceed?
Research Q: Who has more power - tribal council or the Hereditary Chiefs?
Explain the concept in Canada of "unceded land".

November 1, 2018 - Colonization Around the World
• Using the iPads today you are encouraged to research and define colonization around the globe. Choose from a list of countries that were involved with colonization. You may be interested in somewhere else in the world too, let me know before you start your research, but I'm open to other ideas!
Choices: British Empire Spanish Empire Ottoman Empire Dutch Empire Empire of Japan |
Where to start:
All of these countries have a history of colonialism, now it's about narrowing down what country you want to focus on that was colonized. For example - the British colonized Canada, America, and places in Africa. The links I have provided to the left could be a starting place, but use these launch pads to explore on google, history.com, Canadian Encyclopedia, and many more! You MAY use wikipedia - but hopefully it will lead you to other more reliable and interesting sites. More choices: British and Canada, French and the Caribbean, Spanish and North America - Mexico, Florida, etc., British and India, French and Haiti |
After you have decided what country or group of people you may be interested in, begin your research and record your findings. This list of questions is not exclusive! I would also love to hear some interesting facts about these places as well!
Questions to Research:
When did this era of colonization occur?
Who (if one group or individual) led the expeditions?
What was desirable about this desired land?
What were the impacts for the people in these locations?
Did these cultures disappear? Did they adopt the colonizers cultures? Explain.
Questions to Consider:
Why did the group want to colonize this area?
What was the most valuable thing in the 1600-1700’s?
Do you think these colonists had the right to colonize? Why or Why not?
