Day 26: Nov. 22
Peer Assessment!
Today you will be presenting your website to one of your peers. Walk them through your website as they complete their peer assessment form. This will be a good opportunity for you to see some other peoples websites as well as reflect and revise on your own website. Remember that the feedback that you give you peers MUST be 3 things: • KIND • SPECIFIC • HELPFUL |
Day 25: Nov. 20
Finding Reliable Sources:
Do you think this website is reliable? Why or why not?
What about this one?
Wikipedia can sometimes be a good place to START! but not a good website to rely on. Scroll to the bottom of any Wikipedia site to potentially find some other more reliable sources.
Sometimes it will be a website name you recognize, otherwise look for things on a website like authors, clear and well designed lay out, dates, contact information, or how the website URL ends (.edu is a good one)
We will be practicing tracking our sources today by creating a Source Page. Your sources page should look like the one I have created on my website. Check it out!
Next class - get ready for your in class PEER critique. You will be presenting your website to 2-3 of your peers to get some feedback on how to make it better for you final product!

Day 18: Oct. 25
• Like we spoke about last class, social media and Digital media in general, has both positive and negative attributes. Let's continue our conversation on that today. The time has come - you are all digital citizens! Today we are going to talk about how what you say and do online, really does impact people in real life.
• PRO vs. CON = Social Media does more harm than good
Digital Media can Have a Real Impact
In 6 groups, your groups will have 30 minutes to put together a short 4 slide presentation on your assigned topic. Please use the links below to summarize your topic. You can use Google slides or any other presentation medium (don't overthink this Google Slides, Prezi, PowerPoint). There must be one slide per group member (5 group members = 5 slides) Presentations can be no longer than 3 minutes.
•Group 1: Cyberbullying Overview (definition, how it happens, short summary)
•Group 2: Example of how people cyberbully (You may know more examples outside of this page, please share them)
•Group 3: Who does it and why?
•Group 4: The Role of Witnesses (short summary then focus on the bullet points!)
•Group 5: Strategies on how to fight it (Strategies for Empowering Witnesses)
•Group 6: The law (What is defamation? slander? How does the Charter impact the law? What's the law in BC?)
SLIDE TIPS: Remember to use short bullet points and FEW words on your slides. Some of your slides may also be JUST images while one group member is talking. One may be JUST a number/statistic/percentage. This is a quick mini assignment, but let's still make your slides aesthetically pleasing.
* Don't forget to pass along your grade 8 Digital Literacy Interim report to your guardians!

Day 17: Oct. 23
1. Student Interims! Check what you are missing and work, work, work!
2. Generation Like Discussion - What did you think?
What are some of the benefits of YouTube?
Why do people make ridiculous YouTube videos?
What does it mean to sell out?
How did this documentary make you more (or less) aware of the impact of social media?
3. Overall - there are positives and negatives to the use of social media. Let's brainstorm and DEBATE! Remember all good debates start with a strong opening statement. Teams NEVER interrupt, and points are always supported by evidence. All opinions also may not degrade or deny the existence of any person or group of people.
It's super important that not only are you a SAVVY user online - but also smart about what sites to use and not use. Check out this quiz to see how Media Smart you really are.

Day 11: Oct. 3
Today we are going to start talking about your responsibilities as a digital citizen. YES, you are ALL digital citizens, and it’s important that you know the responsibilities around that title. Before we start to create some awesome online products too, I want you to understand your rights, and to respect the rights of others.
Today we will begin our conversation about copyright. What does copyright mean? What does copyright infringement mean? What are the penalties? Let’ start here.
There will be sometimes in the future when you want to use a YouTube video in your final products! But don’t forget all of the copyright laws we just read about! Let’s see what Lumpy and the Lumpettes think!
EMAIL TASK:
Email to emaxwell@seycove.ca
Subject: First Name Last Name YouTube Copyright
You haven’t sent me an email in a few weeks, let’s see if you remember your formal email skills. Remember to always include a subject, an introduction, and a signature at the bottom of your email. Your task is to find a YouTuber that has rights to their products! From the video, click on their name. From there - click on the ABOUT tab on the right.
Your email must include:
• A description of why you chose this particular YouTube person / channel / video —> Have you seen the video before? Did you search your favourite musician? Did you hear about it from a friend? Explain your interest in the video.
• Name of YouTube Account
• Number of subscribers
• Number of views on the particular video you chose
• Date the video was uploaded
• Date that the YouTuber joined YouTube
• Date that you accessed the video
• a LINK to the video so I can see it
• Describe in your own words how you could ever use this video for your own use and why it is important to give credit to the original creators of videos.
Additionally:
• Practice your citations. Citations are used when you USE the YouTube video to LEARN something! Citations are put at the end of a presentation (like in your Google Slides), or when you’re writing a paper. Check out the image below to see how!
Challenge Activity:
• Go to www.keybr.com. Go through the tutorial. Look at the hand placements. Start slow when typing! It will only get easier.

GOOGLE SLIDES: |
Today is a very important day! It is when you will be getting your first big assignment for Digital Literacy 8! This is a fun assignment and a chance for you to practice your research and collaboration skills, all while learning about the impact of technology on different industries around the globe.
You will be getting a paper copy of the assignment in class, and please hold onto it because you will be handing it in the day of your presentation. I have also attached a copy of the assignment below. ![]()
|
For this assignment, we will be practicing our skills using GOOGLE SLIDES.
We are using this website exclusively so that all group members can collaborate on the same document on different devices. We will be going over some of the big points in class, but if you forget anything, here is a really good tutorial on some of the details about how to use Google Slides. |
Day 3: Sept 10
Let's get those notes sheets digital! Directly Responsible Individuals work with your groups to get those notes into our Google Doc. Again - only DRI's are on their computer. Do not log in yet.
What does disruption mean? - Disruptors of Silicon Valley

Sending emails to your teachers is something you will have to get very comfortable with. This is your first real assignment for me!

2. The subject of this email will be: First name Last Name Disruption Prompt
3. Every email must have an introduction: "Hi Ms. Maxwell, Here is my writing prompt I did on disruption" (any other details I need to know! Now's your time!)
3. What do you feel is the biggest technological disruption?
4. Sign off - Thanks, Full Name at the bottom with email underneath

Day 2: Sept 7
• If I don't call your name! Get started on that Google Form, I want to know all about you! See it below from Day. 1
• Everyone else get started on this activity! - We're going to do MEDIA FRIDAYYYYY! Media Friday means that it is your job to check out news, media, new technology, or pop culture. This is an exercise in critical thinking. Is what your reading reliable? Why is what you're reading make the news? Be ready to put your NAME and the link to your webpage to our Media Friday Google Doc.
A good place to start would be Gizmodo, or something like Google News. Almost anything goes because it is interesting to explore WHY something has made the news. But of course, please use your very mature problem solving skills and keep it appropriate.
• How has technology changed the way we live? Posters and Google Doc.
• Computer Lab Etiquette: Don't forget to SIGN OUT of your desktop, tuck in your chair, and leave all devices on.

Day 1: Sept 5
Welcome to Digital Literacy 8! I'm very excited to be here and I hope you are too!
Welcome as well to my website. I won't update this website all the time, but I'll use it when needed - to push certain links, assignments, and readings to you through our computers in the Computer Lab. I will be trying my best to avoid paper as much as possible in this course. Considering it is called "Computers and Communication Devices" AKA Dig Lit
1) I've put together a brief overview of the course for you to get an idea of what we're about to learn. Let's check it out together by clicking on the "digital_literacy_8pdf" below. You can also take a look at the BC Curriculum for the course too. We're under the "Computers and Communication Devices".
2) Speaking of REMIND - Let's get you signed up!
3) Tell me a bit about yourself. If you have a GMAIL account - please use this as a priority over any other email. If you DON't have a gmail account, I suggest you create one. Here's the form.
